What Causes a Water Heater to Fail?

A water heater usually fails because heat, water pressure, minerals, corrosion, and age have slowly worn down the tank or controls. In Oklahoma City, Moore, Norman, Edmond, Midwest City, and the surrounding OKC metro, hard water and sediment buildup are two of the most common reasons homeowners lose hot water, hear popping noises, or find water around the base of the tank.

The Short Answer for Homeowners

Most water heater failures are not sudden in the way they feel sudden. The tank may seem fine on Monday and be leaking by Friday, but the problem usually started years earlier. Minerals collected on the bottom of the tank. The anode rod wore down. The burner, gas valve, thermostat, heating element, or pressure relief valve worked harder than it should. Eventually one weak point became the problem you noticed.

Hard Water and Mineral Buildup

Rust-colored hot water, rusty water at the drain valve, corrosion around fittings, or moisture at the tank jacket can all point to a corrosion problem. Once the tank itself is leaking, repair is usually not a safe long-term option. Parts can be replaced; a failed tank cannot be patched in a way a homeowner should trust.

Failed Heating Elements, Burners, and Gas Controls

Not every water heater failure means the tank is bad. Electric water heaters rely on heating elements and thermostats. Gas water heaters rely on burners, pilot assemblies, thermocouples or flame sensors, gas valves, venting, and safety controls. Any of these parts can fail before the tank reaches the end of its life.

If an electric heater produces some hot water but runs out quickly, the lower element may have failed. If there is no hot water at all, a breaker, thermostat, upper element, or wiring issue may be involved. If a gas heater will not light, will not stay lit, or cycles strangely, the pilot assembly or gas control may be the issue.

Improper installation can also show up as nuisance problems. The pilot may go out because of drafting or combustion air issues. Hot water delivery may be poor because of crossed lines, undersized equipment, or recirculation issues.

Warning Signs Your Water Heater May Be Failing

A leaking tank needs prompt attention. Even a small drip can become a larger failure and damage flooring, drywall, stored items, or nearby equipment.
