Can an Old Two-Handle Shower Valve Be Repaired?
Often, yes. An older valve does not automatically need a full replacement. The condition of the valve body, availability of matching parts, and condition of its internal sealing surfaces help determine whether repair makes sense.
On serviceable compression-style valves, the stem washer closes against an internal seat to stop the water. A worn or damaged seat can keep the valve from sealing even after other parts are replaced. Replacing the seats with the correct parts is an important part of rebuilding this style of valve; changing only the handles does not address an internal sealing problem.
Another Option: A Single-Handle Valve With a Cover Plate
A two-handle shower can also be upgraded to a compatible single-handle valve. A renovation cover plate can conceal the old handle openings around the new valve trim when its size and shape suit the existing wall.
This involves replacing the valve and fitting compatible trim, not simply adding a plate to the old valve. Wall access, opening size, piping, and product compatibility need to be checked first.
