Why Is My AC Running but Not Cooling?

An air conditioner may run without cooling because the thermostat is set incorrectly, the filter or coil is restricting airflow, the outdoor unit is not operating, the evaporator coil is frozen, refrigerant is low from a leak, or a compressor or electrical component has failed. Turn off a frozen system and arrange diagnosis rather than continuing to run it.
Safe checks a homeowner can make
Confirm the thermostat is set to cool, the temperature is below room temperature, the filter is not visibly blocked, supply registers are open, and the outdoor disconnect or breaker has not obviously tripped. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker; repeated tripping signals a fault.

Why airflow and ice matter
