What Should an HVAC Diagnostic Include?

Written and reviewed by Keyton Forren, licensed mechanical and plumbing contractor · Updated August 10, 2026

An HVAC diagnostic should reproduce or verify the complaint, inspect relevant electrical and mechanical components, measure system operation, identify the failed part or condition, and explain the evidence. It is different from maintenance: diagnosis answers why a system is not working correctly, while maintenance addresses routine condition and prevention.

The diagnostic process

The exact tests depend on the symptom and equipment. A no-cool call may require thermostat checks, voltage and amp measurements, capacitor testing, airflow evaluation, temperature measurements, refrigerant-circuit assessment, and inspection of the indoor and outdoor equipment.

  • Confirm the reported symptom
  • Test the components connected to that symptom
  • Measure rather than guess
  • Explain the failure and repair options
  • Identify safety or compatibility concerns

TradeStrong's diagnostic policy

The $44 fee covers the service visit and diagnosis. It is credited toward a qualifying repair approved within seven days. If no repair is approved, the diagnostic fee remains due.

Questions to ask before approving work

Ask what failed, which measurement or observation supports that conclusion, whether the repair restores the system or only addresses one known issue, what warranty applies, and whether any other option is reasonable.

Frequently asked questions

Is an HVAC diagnostic the same as a tune-up?

No. A diagnostic investigates a problem; a tune-up is planned maintenance and operational checking.

Will a diagnostic find every future failure?

No. It can identify current faults and observable risks, but mechanical and electrical parts can fail later without warning.
